Click Fraud: What It Is and How to Detect It

Click fraud and invalid traffic describe clicks that do not represent genuine prospective customers. The practical goal is to identify suspicious patterns without assuming every low-quality visit is malicious.

Common sources

Invalid clicks can come from bots, click farms, competitors, accidental repeat clicks, monitoring systems or poorly controlled placements. Different ad platforms classify invalid traffic differently.

Warning signs

Signals can include abnormal click frequency, impossible geography, repeated device patterns, zero-engagement bursts or traffic that does not align with campaign targeting.

Measurement impact

Invalid traffic can inflate click counts, distort conversion rates and waste budget. It can also contaminate optimization data if automated systems treat those interactions as genuine.

Detection limits

No single signal proves fraud. Use multiple indicators and compare tracker data with ad-platform and server records before blocking sources or making accusations.
